Arriving
to Maribor was the start of a semester long experience that presented new
opportunities as well as challenges in my academic career. While it is a
popular choice for Erasmus+ students (over 450 each semester) my faculty of
Agriculture and Life Sciences welcomed just 12, meaning we got a much more
personal experience. As all courses are taught in Slovene language those in my
faculty arranged meetings with the professor and other Erasmus+ students
directly. While we had a much more personal experience due to ‘class’ sizes of
2-6, this was also far less time that local students spent with professors.
This meant we had a larger workload outside the classroom – perfect for
self-motivated students who want to control their schedule.
Finding
courses was easy as they were elective credits for me, and a diverse course
list is available. Also, we were permitted to take courses at other faculties
meaning in total I took courses from three faculties which helped create broad
topics for the semester. After arrival I had to update my courses as some
originally scheduled were cancelled, but this was not a problem, and all were
approved by NMBU. Compared to my friends based in other faculties I had more
independent work, but also was far more free to take long weekends or schedule
my meetings on the same day so I could have the rest of the week to work.
The
grant helps enormously in Slovenia, with a cost of living far below Norway but
with a very high quality of life. Additionally, Slovenia provides all students,
local and foreign/exchange, with government subsidized meal coupons. This
enabled us to eat out for most meals, paying usually 2-4 euros for full meal.
Even with going out every weekend and eating out daily, you can do so easily
with the grant plus a small contribution from your own pocket.
Overall
doing Erasmus at the University of Maribor was a great experience, both
academically and socially, where I feel I learned a great deal from courses not
offered at NMBU and also made connections with students and teachers from
different backgrounds. I would recommend Maribor for those who aren’t afraid to
abandoned a traditional schedule for one semester and are able to motivate
themselves to do work on their own.
