From 07.07.2020 to 18.09.2020 I did an Erasmus Traineeship at Mendel University School Forest enterprise. The traineeship consisted of doing various forestry work assignments in the university forest and helping the employees in their daily work. I worked regular working hours for Czech forest workers, 40 hours per week. The first weeks I cleared ditches for branches and other remnants from harvesting from the forest. I also cut grass and did forest weed control in different young forest plots. This is to increase the young trees chances of survival and improving the growth conditions.
Later in the summer, I worked with chainsaw and did thinning
in young forest stands. The work consisted of cutting down trees marked by
another worker, so that the remaining trees will get better growth conditions.
Some days I worked with another employee where we measured cut timber in the
forest for revision. I also cleared trees and branches along forest roads to
make them more accessible. When I didn’t work alone, I worked with two other
Czech employees in the forest that spoke English. They were knowledgeable about
the forest and could answer my questions about forestry in Czech republic. We
used English for communication between me and the other employees, and I think
we both benefitted mutually from this. It was an interesting experience to just
communicate in English for work.
The traineeship was an interesting experience for me,
and I gained knowledge and experience in forestry work. I also got a better
understanding of how forestry is being practiced in Czech republic. The
employees at the Mendel University School forest enterprise were pleasant to work
with, and they allowed me a great degree of autonomy when I was working. I
learned a lot and enjoyed the traineeship, and I would recommend it to other
students.
