I am enrolled in the Nordic master program Aquatic food production: Safety and health. My program required me to do an exchange on my 2nd year of my masters in different countries: either Denmark or Iceland. I chose the University of Iceland because I always wanted to visit the country, I was fascinated by this isolated island, and I wanted to experience the Icelandic lifestyle. Moreover, I heard so much about their focused research in the sustainable use of fish products and their zero-waste policy which made me more interested to do my exchange there.
The university
provides most of the facilities that are needed for a student such as student
housing, gyms, cantines, student bar/restaurant. However, I really recommend
applying for a student housing at least 6 months before going on exchange. The
housing situation in Reykjavik is difficult due to tourists and the rent can be
very expensive. The rent is typically higher than 70000 ISK (4900 NOK) per
month. As for the transport, you can mostly walk around the city, but it can be
challenging in the winter. I recommend getting a student bus card or just buying
a used bike. The food prices are slightly cheaper than in Norway, but I
recommend eating at home to save up for trips around the country.
Since I went on
exchange during covid period, it was hard to meet people while having classes
online. However, the university provides every semester a mentor group which
helps to adjust to the academic changes and meet new exchange students.
Additionally, you will often meet with this group and do multiple activities
that involve other groups while respecting the gathering restrictions. I was
satisfied with the classes and the content they offered, as well as the
professors were really understanding and supportive during the on-going pandemic.
I honestly fell
in love with the country and enjoyed the Icelandic lifestyle during my
exchange. Icelanders are very relaxed; they like to take their time when
enjoying their coffee. They love going to swimming pools and to hot tubs
without stressing about life. The country is incredibly amazing, I had the chance
to go through many new experiences like seeing northern lights and seals,
surviving a month of constant earthquakes, watching a volcano erupting, and of
course adventuring the Icelandic nature!
