MSc in Aquatic Food
Production (AQF program). Joint Master /Norway (NMBU) & Denmark (DTU), 2018-2021
I have been living in
Norway for seven years and I have been working in different areas connected to
Fish biology. However, it was a specialization that was missing in my CV, so I
decided to extend my studies in Aquatic Food Production (Safety & Quality).
The first year of studies were conducted in Ås (NMBU) with focus on aquaculture
production and the second year took place in Denmark (DTU) with focus on
sustainability and quality in food production. All my courses were approved at
NMBU before I move to DTU.
I was very satisfied
with the exchange. It was very easy to find a nice small student studio near
Lyngby and close to DTU. My bicycle made my transport very easy and cheap, I
explored new places and I used it to the university daily. I would definitely recommend
to study “Join Programs” because someone can gain a double experience in
getting closer to different study cultures and explore different countries, so
after can decide which country “fits” more to him. A double degree can also
show how flexible a student can be to adapt in two countries in a short period.
The study process was not affected by corona situation (sept 2020) as many of students
could work online via TEAMS and physically. DTU was very well prepared for this
situation.
The host university
(DTU) is very well-organised so in case there is a course that is not
conducted/or cancelled for various reasons, they try to create a new course
fitted to the needs of the student and the study program. A large part of the
assignments was conducted in teams. This can be a little bit challenge because
students come from different educational background, but on the other hand, knowledge
is exchanged, and socializing is important. The professors are helpful, communicative,
and professional as they also consulted us to create a LinkedIn profiles so it
can be easier for us to contact the future employers. Tips like “unsolicited
applications” that I did not know before, seems a nice approach for the student
candidate to gain network and learn more about a company's activities. Apart
from exploring the danish culture abroad and the high educational level, I also
obtained a good overview of the prerequisites of the danish labour market.
The campus
establishments, the laboratory equipment, the huge classes, the library and
auditoriums are astonishing and clean, the educational methods are modern, the
sanitation bottles due to corona was available everywhere. There are also nice
cantinas with delicious danish cakes and aromatic coffee.
The Erasmus grant is in
general very beneficial; however, I would propose to find a flexible student
job to be more convenient, so you do not need to stress so much about your
budget. Copenhagen is an international city of full energy, there are many nice
places to eat and many events are always up coming. “Nyhavn” area is amazing in
all seasons, and everyone deserves to enjoy a churro with ice-cream or an
authentic Italian pizza.
DTU offers cheap
accommodation in campus as well as outside of this. Generally, there are many options,
always according to a student’s budget. The challenge to this type of studies is
to be open, flexible, and willing to establish to a new country in a short
period even if you are started to get used to the first one, and last but not
the least: to cycle with your helmet 😊.
