Study Report
Hi!
I’m
studying Feed Manufacturing Technology at NMBU and it’s my second year now. I
exchanged to Wageningen University & Research for one semester from
September to December in 2018. I would like to share my experience at WUR to
the students who also want to go on an exchange to the university. From my
experiences I can tell you that it’s an unforgettable choice.
I really
had a great time in the four months at WUR. I joined the first introduction
week which is called AID (Annual Introduction Days ) and lasted for one week.
It is not obligatory. The university arranges this for new students to know the
student life, the campus and most importantly, get to know each other and have
a chance to make life-long friends. As long as you sign up for AID, you will
have your own family group with two or three monitors decided by the AID
organization and around 10-12 members in total. There will be new students both
international and Dutch. As a family, you can join all the events every day.
That was a really crazy and awesome week for me, indeed I had a lot fun with my
family group. If you want to know more about WUR or want to make friends, I
strongly recommend you join AID.

The course
schedule and exam system at WUR are different from at NMBU. They divide one
year to six periods. In each period, you can take two or three courses, one for
the third and the forth, and the exams come at the end of every period. At the
first period when I was at WUR, I felt a bit intensive with the courses,
assignments and group works. The reading materials and assignments with groups
are more than at NMBU. However, I got better and was not nervous any more after
one months. Exams are with more questions or multiple choices instead of
several general questions at NMBU, which means that you need to read and
understand more details.
Regarding
the courses, I’m quite satisfied with the quality and classifications. There
are more specialization subjects with courses, especially in life sciences. You
can find all courses on the website and choose whatever you want to take.
Apart from
lectures, you can also participate the study association. They always organize
some excursions or dinner party together. It is also a good chance to make
friends and know more students from your field.
The Erasmus
Grant of 410 Euros per month helped me a lot. It was the half of the required
payment (living cost 890 Euro per month), which will pay back after you are at
WUR per month. The grant covers the rent for the apartment or with a bit more
living cost if you are lucky to get a cheaper room.
The
expenses for the living and food are cheaper compared with at NMBU. I found a
room around 300 Euros which is a common apartment type with shared bathroom and
kitchen, and also quite cheap. Every Wednesday morning and Saturday, there
is an open market in the city center (15 minutes by bike from campus). You
can buy cheaper vegetables, fruit or bread, or Dutch cheese Gouda.
I’m glad I
chose to study at WUR. I learned and experienced a lot more than what I
expected. I made so many friends with whom I still keep in contact with. I wish
those who choose to go WUR also have a
great time there. Good luck!

As off-campus housing is a popular option (especially at the larger universities) it’s advisable to start your search early.
